In short

Molluscum contagiosum is a benign viral skin condition caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, a poxvirus. It shows as small, shiny, dome-shaped bumps, many with a navel-like dimple in the centre. Unlike common warts, it is not caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is common in children and also occurs in adults. At Paramed, molluscum is removed with CO2 laser after a doctor's examination and dermatoscopy.

How it goes

1. The dermatologist examines the lesions and performs dermatoscopy to tell molluscum from other growths. 2. Local anaesthesia. 3. Each bump is removed with CO2 laser. 4. A small crust forms and falls off in 7–14 days.

How we remove it

The CO2 laser (10,600 nm) vaporises each bump layer by layer while coagulating the vessels, so removal is precise and almost bloodless. If there are many lesions, treatment may be split into several sessions — the doctor will tell you at the examination.

Before and after

Before the procedure
  • Don't scratch or squeeze the bumps — it spreads.
  • Use your own towel.
  • Examination and dermatoscopy before removal.
After the procedure
  • Keep crusts dry and don't pick them.
  • Apply antiseptic as the doctor advises.
  • No pool or sauna until healed.
  • Show any new lesion to the doctor.

FAQ

? What is molluscum contagiosum? ⌄

A benign viral skin condition: small, shiny, dome-shaped bumps, many with a dimple in the centre.

? Is it contagious? ⌄

Yes. It spreads by direct contact, shared towels and items, and in pools. Scratching spreads it to other areas of the skin.

? How is it different from a wart? ⌄

Warts are caused by HPV, molluscum by the molluscum contagiosum virus. Molluscum is usually smooth, shiny and dimpled; the doctor confirms the diagnosis with dermatoscopy.

? Does it go away on its own? ⌄

It often clears by itself within months, but meanwhile it can spread and be passed on. Whether to remove it is decided at the examination.

? My child has molluscum — what should I do? ⌄

It is common in children. A dermatologist will examine and choose the approach. On Saturdays, dermatoscopy for children aged 0–16 is free.

? How much does removal cost? ⌄

20–50 AZN — the exact price depends on the number and size of the lesions; the doctor will tell you at the examination. Dermatologist consultation is 50 AZN, free with a same-day procedure.
