Alexandrite laser vs Soprano ICE — which to choose in Baku

The "classic alexandrite 755 nm" is the wavelength people know from Candela GentleLase and Cynosure Apogee. Soprano ICE from Alma Lasers is a diode platform with active contact cooling (ICE) and the In-Motion technique. At Paramed (Baku) we run the Soprano line, including a 755 nm alexandrite module.

The comparison in brief

When people say "alexandrite laser", they usually mean the classic 755 nm platform with a stamping pulse and cryogenic DCD cooling — Candela GentleLase, Cynosure Apogee and similar. Soprano ICE is Alma Lasers' diode platform with active contact cooling via a sapphire tip and the SHR + In-Motion technique: instead of single "shots", the device gradually heats the follicle with a series of low-energy pulses. The Soprano ICE Alexandrite version uses the same 755 nm wavelength, but in a different architecture — ICE cooling and motion rather than DCD spray and a single stamp. At Paramed the Soprano line includes 755 nm alexandrite as part of Soprano ICE / Platinum / Titanium. Contraindications apply.

Original Soprano platforms (Alma Lasers)

Paramed uses original Soprano ICE, Platinum and Titanium platforms by Alma Lasers (Israel), with original handpieces and safety-first protocols.

Why we chose the Soprano line at Paramed

  • Alexandrite 755 nm is part of the Soprano line at our clinic — in ICE / Platinum / Titanium
  • Active ICE contact cooling — comfort during the session
  • SHR + In-Motion — gradual heating without sharp pain peaks
  • Four Soprano platforms in one center — we pick the optimum per zone and phototype
  • Test patch 3 AZN — try the device before committing to a course

How we pick the wavelength and the device

At the consultation the specialist assesses phototype on the Fitzpatrick scale, hair density, color and type, skin condition and any residual tan. If your profile is closer to phototypes I–III with fine or light-dark hair, we lean into 755 nm alexandrite (within Soprano). For darker skin or recent tan, we shift toward Soprano ICE Diode (810 nm) or the multi-wavelength platforms (Platinum / Titanium). Protocol parameters are tuned individually.

How classic alexandrite and Soprano ICE work

Classic alexandrite 755 nm (Candela GentleLase, Cynosure Apogee) uses a stamping pulse with cryogenic spray cooling (DCD) milliseconds before each shot. High melanin selectivity delivers good results on light phototypes (I–III) but raises risk on darker skin (IV–VI). Soprano ICE uses Alma Lasers' diode architecture: a sapphire tip with active contact cooling (ICE — Indirect Contact Energy), gradual movement across the skin (In-Motion) and a series of low-energy pulses instead of a single strong one (SHR — Super Hair Removal). The Soprano ICE Alexandrite version keeps the 755 nm wavelength but accumulates the pulse gradually while the skin is cooled continuously through the session. It's a different working method and a different comfort profile.

  • Classic alexandrite 755 nm — stamping pulse, DCD spray cooling
  • Soprano ICE — 810 nm diode with active ICE contact cooling
  • Soprano ICE Alexandrite — same 755 nm but with ICE + SHR + In-Motion
  • Alexandrite "sees" hair melanin well — selective on fine and light hair
  • Soprano: fewer sharp pain peaks, better for large areas and sensitive skin

Course plan

A laser hair removal course is typically 5–8 sessions at 4–6 week intervals — whether on classic alexandrite or Soprano ICE. The goal is durable long-term reduction of hair growth. Sun avoidance and SPF are recommended between sessions.

Alexandrite and Soprano ICE — pros and cons

Alexandrite 755 nm (Candela GentleLase / Cynosure and similar)
Pros
  • High selectivity for hair melanin
  • Well-known wavelength with extensive clinical experience
  • Works well on fine, light-to-medium-dark hair
  • Suits phototypes I–III
Cons
  • Only one wavelength (755 nm)
  • Restrictions on dark skin (IV–VI)
  • Sensitive to tan
  • Stamping pulse — more passes on large areas
  • DCD cooling — brief, only just before the pulse
Soprano ICE (Alma Lasers, 810 nm diode)
Pros
  • Active ICE contact cooling through a sapphire tip
  • SHR + In-Motion: less discomfort, gradual heating
  • 810 nm reacts less with skin melanin
  • Wider phototype window (II–IV with comfort preserved)
  • Fewer "pain peaks" — suits sensitive zones
Cons
  • Slightly weaker on very fine, light hair vs classic alexandrite
  • Requires an experienced operator to tune SHR parameters
  • Session "feel" differs from DCD-based systems
Soprano ICE Alexandrite (755 nm with ICE cooling)
Pros
  • Same 755 nm wavelength as classic alexandrite
  • Active contact cooling instead of DCD spray
  • Gradual follicle heating — comfort during the session
  • Suits phototypes I–III with fine and light-dark hair
Cons
  • Parameters tuned individually at consultation
  • Doesn't override the general 755 nm limits on dark skin

Contraindications (common to alexandrite and Soprano)

  • ⚠️ Pregnancy and lactation
  • ⚠️ Active tan (especially with 755 nm)
  • ⚠️ Oncological conditions
  • ⚠️ Inflammation or infection in the area
  • ⚠️ Decompensated diabetes
  • ⚠️ Photosensitizing medication
  • ⚠️ Fresh tattoos in the area
  • ⚠️ Epilepsy (case-by-case)

FAQ

? Do you have a "classic" alexandrite laser — Candela GentleLase or Cynosure?

Not as a standalone platform. Alexandrite 755 nm is available within the Soprano line: Soprano ICE Alexandrite, Soprano Platinum and Soprano Titanium. The wavelength is the same, but the architecture differs: instead of a stamping pulse with DCD spray, you get a diode architecture with active ICE contact cooling, SHR and In-Motion.

? Which is better — alexandrite or Soprano ICE?

It depends on phototype and hair type. Light skin (I–III) with fine or light-dark hair gives maximum selectivity at 755 nm. Darker skin or residual tan is safer at 810 nm (Soprano ICE Diode) or Nd:YAG 1064 nm (Soprano Platinum / Titanium). All else equal, Soprano ICE delivers more comfort thanks to contact cooling.

? How does Soprano ICE cooling differ from DCD?

DCD is a cryogenic spray that cools the skin milliseconds before the pulse. ICE is active contact cooling via a sapphire tip, working continuously throughout the session. Contact cooling pairs better with In-Motion and reduces discomfort on large areas.

? Can alexandrite be used on dark skin?

Pure 755 nm alexandrite carries higher burn risk on phototypes IV–VI. For dark skin, the safer primary protocol is Nd:YAG 1064 nm. On Soprano Titanium / Platinum the protocol shifts toward Nd:YAG for darker phototypes.

? Do I need more or fewer sessions than on classic alexandrite?

Session count is driven by hair type and hormonal background, not the device name. A typical course is 5–8 sessions at 4–6 week intervals.

? How much is laser hair removal at Paramed?
